Do foreigners working in China need to participate the social insurance and housing provident fund?
According to Chinese laws and regulations, expats who are legally recruited by employers shall participate social insurances.The employer who hires the foreign employee shall register social insurances procedures for the foreigner within 30 days from the date of issuance of work permit.
In order to avoid double payments, China has signed the mutual social insurance exemption agreement with 12 countries in terms of Japan, Korea, Canada, Switzerland, Serbia in some special types and persons.
There are no mandatory requirements to participate in housing provident fund, and expats can negotiate with the employer whether to pay the housing provident fund.
